How To Recognize Tire Markings

May 12, 2023

Tires are important parts of automobiles, there are more than 10 kinds of marks on automobile tires, and the correct identification of these marks is very important for the selection, use and maintenance of tires, and is of great significance for ensuring driving safety and prolonging the service life of tires.

Tire specifications: Specifications are the marking data of tire geometric parameters and physical properties. Tire specifications are often represented by a set of numbers, the former indicating the width of the tire section and the latter indicating the rim diameter, both in inches. The middle letter or symbol has a special meaning: "x" means high pressure tire; "R", "Z" for radial tires; "One" indicates low-pressure tires.

Level: Hierarchy refers to the nominal number of layers of the cord in the tire rubber layer, which is not exactly consistent with the actual number of cord layers, and is an important indicator of tire strength. Levels are marked with Chinese, such as 12 levels; Use English logos such as "14P. R" is 14 poles.

Cord material: some tires are marked separately, such as "nylon" (NYLON), generally marked after the layer; Some tire manufacturers in the world mark after the specifications, with the first letter of Hanyu Pinyin, such as 9.00-20N, 7.50-20G, etc., N means nylon, G means steel wire, M means cotton thread, R means rayon.

Load and air pressure: generally indicate the maximum load and corresponding air pressure, the load is measured in "kg", and the air pressure is the tire pressure in "kilopascals".

Rim specifications: Indicates the rim specifications used to match the tire. Easy to use, such as "Standard Rim 5.00F".

Balance mark: made of colored rubber in the shape of the mark, printed on the sidewall, indicating that the tire is the lightest here, and should be assembled directly against the valve to ensure the balance of the entire tire.

Rolling direction: The pattern on the tire is particularly critical to the drainage and anti-skid during driving, so the off-road vehicle tires with asymmetrical patterns are often equipped with arrow signs to assemble the rolling direction to ensure the adhesion and anti-skid performance of the design. If it is misplaced, it is counterproductive.

Wear limit mark: the tire side with rubber strips, blocks to mark the tire wear limit, once the tire wear reaches this mark position should be replaced in time, otherwise it will be punctured midway due to insufficient strength.

Production batch number: marked by a set of numbers and letters, indicating the date and quantity of the tire manufactured. For example, "98N08B5820" indicates the 5820th tyre produced in Group B in August 1998. The production lot number is used to identify the age of the tire and the storage time.

Trademark: Trademark is the logo of tire manufacturers, including trademark words and patterns, generally more prominent and eye-catching, easy to identify. Most of them are marked with the name of the manufacturer.

Other marks: such as product grade, production license number and other subsidiary marks. It can be used as reference and information for selection.

Tire markings are generally marked more standardized, and after clear identification, you can buy and use with confidence.

The following is a common representation of tire specifications:

Example: 185/70R1486H

185: Tread width (mm)

70: Flat ratio (tire height÷ tire width)

R: Meridian structure

14: Steel rim diameter (inch)

86: Load factor (indicates the corresponding maximum load of 530 kg)
