Misconceptions about tire purchase: As long as the date is fresh

May 31, 2024

Tire performance has nothing to do with time

Among the many factors that affect tire performance, time has never been a factor.

In fact, many years ago, the leading tire company conducted a test and found that tires that had been stored for more than three years had almost no difference in performance from tires produced that year. In fact, before the tire is installed on the car, its performance will not be affected in any way except that it may be affected by the storage temperature of the warehouse.

Tires are made of a variety of raw materials such as natural rubber, synthetic rubber, carbon black and steel cord. Therefore, its shelf life is generally about 5 years. This also means that as long as the storage temperature of the warehouse does not change much, there is no performance difference between tires produced in 2024 and tires produced in 2021. Generally speaking, newly manufactured tires need to be stored for a period of time to stabilize the performance of the tires and achieve better results. Tires are not like buying vegetables, the fresher the better!

In fact, it is not the storage time that really determines the life of the tire, but the factors such as road conditions, driving environment, and driving habits that will affect the tire life and performance after the tire is installed on the car and runs on the road.

Instead of worrying about the production date of the tire and the impact of storage time on tire performance, it is better to maintain the tire well, check the tire pressure regularly, clean the stones in the tire gaps and patterns regularly, avoid tires being exposed to the sun for a long time, reduce emergency braking to avoid tire overheating, reduce bad driving habits such as driving on curbs, and reduce the driving "burden" of tires from the root, so that the tires can be used longer and perform better!
